      What is lit up?

      When you start the car, every warning light comes on for a moment and goes out. Press START, then point to the one that stays on in your car.

      Oil pressure

      Too little oil, or the pump is not building pressure. Driving on can seize the engine within minutes.

      Now: switch the engine off and check the dipstick. If the level is fine and the light stays on, do not restart it, call us.

      Engine temperature

      The engine is overheating: low coolant, a failed thermostat, fan or water pump.

      Now: pull over and switch the engine off. Do not open the coolant tank while it is hot, it is under pressure.

      Battery charging

      The alternator is not charging. The car is running on what is left in the battery, usually a quarter of an hour or so.

      Now: switch off the air con, radio and heated screen, drive straight to us and do not stop the engine on the way.

      Brake system

      The handbrake is on, the brake fluid is low, or there is a fault in the system.

      Now: check the handbrake is released. If it is and the pedal feels soft, do not drive any further.

      Engine warning light

      The engine computer has logged a fault: a sensor, ignition, injection or the EGR valve. If it flashes, the engine is misfiring.

      Now: drive gently, no hard acceleration. If it flashes or the car loses power, take the shortest way here.

      ABS

      The system that stops the wheels locking is off, usually because of a wheel sensor. The brakes work, but the wheels can lock in the wet.

      Now: leave a bigger gap and brake more gently, especially in the rain.

      Tyre pressure

      One of the tyres has lost pressure. If it drops again after pumping up, there is a nail in it or a leaking valve.

      Now: check the pressures at the nearest petrol station, the values are on the sticker in the driver's door.

      Diesel particulate filter

      The diesel filter is clogged with soot, usually from driving only in town.

      Now: drive for 20 minutes on a ring road at steady revs, the filter often cleans itself. If the light stays on, come in.

      Glow plugs

      In a diesel it lights up briefly before starting, which is normal. If it flashes while driving, the engine computer is reporting a fault.

      Now: if the car starts normally, drive on. If it cranks for a long time in the morning, have the plugs replaced before winter.

      What's that noise?

      A mechanic can often tell what is wrong by the sound. Listen to the seven most common noises and pick the one your car makes.
